Robo Calls, Other Phone Scams

As a public service, the Apache Junction Police Department provides the public information that may improve quality of life issues. Like other communities nationwide, a recurring issue is robo calls, or calls made by a computer with a pre-recorded message. Many criminal elements have adopted this technology and use it to defraud citizens. The following tips may be used for your cellular phone, and to some extent a landline telephone.

Step #1: Do not answer a phone call that you do not recognize the name and/or telephone number through caller ID. Just push the end call button. If you do not have caller ID and you answer a call where you don’t know the person or company, hang up immediately.

Step #2: Register your phones with the National Do Not Call Registry. The Federal Trade Commission has a site where you can sign up at: This may not stop all of the calls but, this is a free service. You can also use this site to file reports on unwanted calls.

Step #3: Contact your phone service provider for their do not call list. They may have call blocking equipment that they can provide, usually for a fee.

Step #4: Use a free robo call blocker or other app. Some charge for continuous service. If you receive a lot of these calls it may be worthwhile to you. Keep in mind that any blocking system cannot stop political, non-profit, charities and businesses that you have used recently.
