The city will be repaving and improving two segments of Baseline Avenue over the next two months.
The segments of Baseline affected are from Meridian Road to Ironwood Drive and from Winchester Drive to Tomahawk Road. Advance work in September includes clearing within the right-of-way, updating sidewalk ramps to current ADA standards and extending a storm drain crossing between Meridian and Ironwood.
Scheduled for October, the principal work will be the repaving which will include the strengthening of the road base. Bike lanes will be added for both segments with a new shared left-turn lane added to Baseline from the CAP canal to Ironwood. Baseline, between Royal Palm and Tomahawk roads, is to be re-aligned about 30 feet to the north to better the geometrics of its intersection with Tomahawk Road.
“Safety improvement will be a significant outcome of this project,” says Mike Wever, director of the city’s Public Works Department. “Specifically, this project will not just take care of the existing deteriorated asphalt, but will help straighten out the existing curves in both roadway segments and meet the increasing need of a shared left-turn lane west of Ironwood. In addition, the road’s realignment will make the Baseline/Tomahawk intersection safer for all users with its very large volume of truck traffic. Finally, bike lanes will be a huge improvement for cyclists that currently, and into the future, look to use the roadway.”
The work will include some lane restrictions/closures or detours while maintaining business access. Please follow all traffic control signs.
Any questions related to this project should be directed to the Public Works Department at (480) 982-1055.
