The ultimate goal of Victim Advocacy offered by the Prosecutor's office is to provide crime victims the understanding and confidence needed to actively participate in the legal process.

This advocate helps victims of crime deal with legal, emotional and safety issues. The Victim Advocate provides information necessary to participate in the justice system and ensure victims feel their questions are answered and their needs are met. To assist victims throughout this process, the Victim Advocate offers many services, which include but are not limited to:

  • advising victim of legal rights
  • giving notification of court hearings
  • accompanying victims to court upon request
  • aiding in obtaining restitution (where applicable)
  • providing referrals for necessities such as food, medical, clothing, safe house, lock changes, storage, etc. . . .
  • helping victims obtain order of protection/injunction against harassment

Victim Rights

As a victim of crime, you have the following rights:
To be notified of the date, time and place of court hearings involving the defendant; to be notified of the release or escape of the defendant from custody.
To be told the name, address and phone number of the prosecutor's office handling the case.
To be told if a prosecutor decides not to proceed with a prosecution and to be given the reasons.
To refuse a defense interview, and to set reasonable conditions for any
such interview you choose to grant
