The Apache Junction Police Department would like to remind everyone to be on guard against the latest scam—You are a Sweepstakes Winner! You may be contacted by telephone, email pop up, Facebook, or regular U.S. mail. The message may contain language that states, "Congratulations, I am happy to inform you that the results of the lottery showed your name among the winners!"
Do not believe it.
They may say your check is already in the mail. It is not! They may say, all you need to do is send a check or money order in for the taxes and the prize is yours. Don’t fall for it!
Another scam is when the criminal says that you won the lottery and they are looking to distribute the winnings. The caller convinces you to pay them a 5 percent transfer fee and then they disappear with your 5 percent. Anyone asking you to pay up front for a promised larger return is a scam.
If it sounds too good to be true, It is! The best response to any of these contacts is to hang up, hit delete/mark as spam email; and if on Facebook, notify Facebook of the scam attempt.
If you have any questions, please contact the AJPD Community Resource Coordinator, at (480) 474-5442 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
